What’s A Keto Mug Cake?
A Keto Mug Cake is like a traditional cake but it’s made in a mug, in just about 2 minutes in the microwave.
To be keto-friendly, it uses low-carb flour, unsweetened cocoa, and sugar-free sweeteners to reduce the net carbs per serving.
Why You’ll Love This Mug Cake
This keto mug cake is an absolutely delicious keto dessert and most people won’t be able to tell it’s keto.
It’s also:
- Ready In Under 5 Minutes
- Gluten-Free
- Sugar-Free
- Rich In Chocolate Cake Flavors
How To Make Keto Mug Cake
Like other mug cake recipes, this keto mug cake is so easy to make.
Ingredients
- Almond Flour – Almond flour is a healthy keto-friendly flour that can be used in many almond flour recipes. Prefer ultra-fine almond flour over a grittier almond meal.
- Baking Powder
- Cocoa Powder – Make sure to use unsweetened cocoa powder as some manufacturers include sugar in their mix.
- Erythritol – Erythritol is one of my favorite keto-friendly sweeteners.
- Coconut Oil – Coconut oil is full of healthy fat, but you can also use melted butter.
- Almond Milk – You must use unsweetened almond milk to keep this keto mug cake low in carbs.
- Egg – I prefer free-range eggs at room temperature. You can take them out of the fridge up to one hour before baking.
- Vanilla Extract
- Sugar-Free Chocolate Chips – Use either store-bought chocolate chips or make my Sugar-Free Chocolate Chips Recipe.
Making The Batter
Take the egg and almond milk out of the fridge about 30 minutes before preparing the mug cake. Cold ingredients tend to skew the texture.
Melt the coconut oil in the microwave but make sure it isn’t too hot. Coconut oil melts at 73°F (23°C), so all you need is a very brief warm-up.
Combine all the liquid ingredients in a mixing bowl.
Add the dry ingredients gradually: almond flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, crystal sweetener, and half of the sugar-free chocolate chips.
Once the keto mug cake batter is consistent, pour it into a tall mug greased with coconut oil.
Baking The Mug Cake
You can bake the keto mug cake in the microwave, air fryer, or oven.
Microwave
Place the mug in the middle of your microwave and cook it on high (900W) for 60 seconds.
Check the texture of the keto mug cake. If it’s still raw, keep cooking in 10-second bursts up to 90 seconds in total.
Air Fryer
Place the mug in the center of the air fryer basket and cook it for 5 to 8 minutes at 350°F (180°C) until a pick inserted in the middle of the keto mug cake comes out clean of crumbs.
Baking
Preheated the oven to 350°F (180°C) and bake the keto mug cake for 15 to 18 minutes or until a pick inserted in the center of the mug cake comes out without crumbs.
Add-Ons
Once you’ve cooked the keto mug cake, add the rest of the sugar-free chocolate chips on top.
If you like to vary the taste of your mug cake, you can:
- Add a tablespoon of peanut butter to make a chocolate peanut butter mug cake
- Add berries to make a chocolate raspberry mug cake
- Add pecans to make a brownie mug cake.
Storage Instructions
You can prepare this keto mug cake batter ahead and store it in the mug wrapped with plastic wrap to keep it sealed. Store the batter for up to 24 hours in the refrigerator.
It’s not possible to store the keto mug cake for longer than 30 minutes once it has been baked as it would dry out very fast.
If you cook the mug cake in the oven, you might be able to store it for up to 24 hours in the fridge.
Reheat this low-carb treat in the microwave.
Allergy Swaps
If you have allergies to some of the ingredients, you can do the following substitution options:
- Almond Flour – If you are allergic to almond flour, you can replace it with the same measurement of sunflower seed flour, or with one tablespoon of coconut flour.
- Erythritol – Erythritol can be gut upsetting for some. If that’s the case, swap it for allulose, tagatose, or xylitol.
- Almond Milk – You can replace the almond milk with any unsweetened plant-based milk such as coconut milk, soy milk, or oat milk.
Frequently Asked Questions

Keto Mug Cake Recipe
Ingredients
- 3 tablespoons Almond Flour
- ¼ teaspoon Baking Powder
- 2 tablespoons Unsweetened Cocoa Powder
- 1 ½ tablespoon Granulated Sweetener
- 1 tablespoon Coconut Oil melted or melted butter
- 1 tablespoon Unsweetened Almond Milk
- 1 large Egg beaten, at room temperature
- 1 teaspoon Vanilla Extract
- 1 ½ tablespoon Sugar-Free Chocolate Chips
Instructions
- Grease a microwave-proof ramekin or tall coffee mug with coconut oil. Choose one that is at least 2.5-inch tall and 3.5-inch wide. This will prevent the mug cake from overflowing when microwaving. Set aside.
- In a small bowl, whisk the egg, melted coconut oil, almond milk, and vanilla extract. Make sure the egg is not cold, or it will solidify the coconut oil, forming lumps. For a moister cake, use melted butter. For a chewier cake, use melted coconut oil.
- Stir in almond flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, erythritol, and half the amount of sugar-free chocolate chips.
- Pour the batter into the prepared mug cake.
- Microwave on high (800W) for 80-90 seconds or until set in the center. Make sure you check the microwave power. If yours is higher (1000W), you may have to microwave the mug cake for only 60-70 seconds to get the same texture.
- Sprinkle the remaining chocolate chips on the hot mug cake and cool for 60 seconds in the mug before eating.
- Serve with a dust of sugar-free powdered erythritol and a dollop of unsweetened whipped cream on top (use coconut cream for dairy-free paleo option).
