Are Keto Recipes Good For Diabetics?
The Ketogenic diet and a diet to manage your diabetes have something in common. They are trying to reduce the intake of carbohydrates. Their goals, however, are slightly different. If you just started the keto diet, you know that your goal is to be in ketosis.
Ketosis is a metabolic state where your body turns your stored fat into ketones and uses them as energy sources. Since you have reduced your blood glucose, the muscles, brain, and other tissues in your body use these ketones,
With diabetes, the goal is different. Your body doesn’t produce enough insulin. Insulin is responsible for helping to store blood glucose for later use. As a result, people with diabetes tend to have very high blood glucose levels.
So the goal of managing diabetes is to keep that blood sugar level low. This is done through the consumption of low Glycemic Index (GI) / low GL (Glycemic Load) foods.
There has been some research to try to understand if the Keto diet can be useful for people with diabetes.
- For Type 1 diabetes, the Keto diet might help manage A1C levels and glycemic control. But it is absolutely essential to talk to your doctor before starting.
- For Type 2 diabetes, it is now well-known that the Keto diet can have very positive effects.

How To Make Desserts For People With Diabetes
3 main ingredients help you create delicious diabetic-friendly desserts.
Low-carb flour
First, low-carb flour if it’s a cake or a cookie. As a result, low-carb, diabetic dessert recipes often use almond flour, coconut flour, or seed meals like flaxseed meals.
In fact, white-wheat flour is high in carbs and acts like sugar in your body.
As a result, low-carb, diabetic dessert recipes are made of high-fiber flours that don’t impact blood sugar levels.
Baking for diabetics means using low-carb flour but also healthy, low-GI sweeteners.
Low-carb sweeteners
Next, the choice of sugar-free sweeteners is crucial to keep diabetic-friendly desserts low in carbs.
It should be noted that depending on your diabetes type, your choice of sweetener can vary.
The sweeteners listed below are approved for type 1 diabetes and keto desserts.
- Sugar-alcohols like erythritol. This is a very healthy sugar-free alternative made of fermented sugar. There is no alcohol or sugar left in the product at the end. However, it can be used in a 1:1 ratio to replace sugar in the recipe.
- Monk fruit crystal
- Monk fruit maple-flavored syrup
- Stevia drops
- Xylitol
Indeed these 4 sugar-free sweeteners don’t impact blood sugar and have a near-zero glycemic index.
On the other hand, sweeteners like honey, maple syrup, and coconut sugar have higher sugar content.
They should not be recommended in diabetes desserts.
Healthy fat
Finally, healthy fats help stabilize sugar-level when combined with protein. It can be listed as healthy fat, avocado, coconut oil, olive oil, and seed oil.

Hi. I tried making the zucchini tortillas for the first time this week. They did cook and sort of brown, but they did not look as golden color as the ones in your picture. Also, the inside did not seem to cook as much and was still like the batter. So the outside was dry and cooked but the inside was mostly uncooked. Where did I go wrong? I want to try it again!
Hi Mylene, my first question will be did you substitute any ingredient in the recipe? If the outside is cooking faster it probably means that the center of the tortillas was thicker in the center. Also another thing could be that you did not squeeze out all the water from the zucchini leaving some moisture in the batter that make it harder to cook. Finally if it is not golden and the outside crisp too fast it could be a too warm oven. Always cook on fan bake mode to ensure that the tortillas cook well evenly. I hope this help! It is a delicious recipe and I make it all the time without any issue so it should work for you too 🙂 See you soon on the blog Mylene.
Thank you very much for this lovely feedback on my blog, it makes me very happy. I am so glad your girl enjoy what she read here. Have a lovely time making my recipes. XOXO Carine.
